IE6 won't connect to Internet while other browsers will

IE6 won't connect to Internet while other browsers will.
The program just hangs. Nothing shows up on the address
bar, the page, or the progress bar. When you go to IE
properties, it is very slow to respond. Ir freezes when
you try to go to the "Connections" tab. Also, when I try
to make configuration changes to my internet connection
for Symantec LiveUpdate, the IE setting freeze once again
and I have to close "rundll32.exe."

I need this to work so that my server can update its virus
definitions. It appears that Symantec's services are very
closely tied with the ability (or lack thereof) for IE to
work.

OS: Windows 2000 Server
Steps tried:
Gets IP address
Can ping WAN IP addresses and domains
Installed other browsers (Opera and Netscape), these work
without problems
Ran symantec virus removal tools (Sasser, Beagle, Netsky) -
nothing found
Tried to uncheck "third party extensions" in IE - caused
it to lock up.

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
