IE6 will not open.

Every time i go to open IE6 I get the error where it says it needs to close
and send an error report to Microsoft. I have tried to reinstall it, but it
tells me that I need the CD for SP1. Since i dowloaded from the updates
site, I do not have this CD. I can still visit sites through MSN 9 but not
IE. If some one could point me in a direction I would appreciate it Thank
you.

Hi,

Not sure of the Window version you are using. Try reinstalling IE following the steps given below:

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, navigate to the following registry key:

a. Click the plus (+) sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

b. Click the plus (+) sign next to SOFTWARE.

c. Click the plus (+) sign next to Microsoft.

d. Click the plus (+) sign next to Active Setup.

e. Click the plus (+) sign next to Installed Components.

f. Click the {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85- 00AA005B4383} key.

4. Right-click the "IsInstalled (REG_DWORD)" value and then click Modify.

5. Change the value data from 1 to 0 and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.

Now, download and install Internet Explorer 6 ( using anyother browser like MSN):

If this doesnt help, reply with the Windows version ( 98, ME, XP etc).

Brian,
This is probably being caused by third party programs- malware/parasites.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.

Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
