IE6 takes long time to boot up since Java 6

I have installed Java SE runtime env 6 from an earlier version of Java. Is
this the right programme for a normal user to install? I find since
installing it that IE 6 and OE 6 take an awful long time to open up and I
think
it must be this new installation.

I am running XP Home on a Pentium D machine. Any help please?

TIA

Run this URL > http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
Post the results from the Java test.
I suspect you have not uninstalled previous Java updates.

Thanks for that suggestion silj.

I believe I had removed all older versions of Java before installing the
latest, as I read this was the proper procedure.

I went to the site you suggested and it tells me that Java is working
correctly on my machine.

The information says I have

JRE vers 1.4.2_02
Op Sys Windows XP
OS vers 5.1

Is this correct?

Does Java (108MB) have to load up each time IE is opened?

TIA

You really should upgrade to the newest version of the Runtime
environment. It's the 4th item on the following page:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You also said something about a 108mb file? You only need the Java RTE
download which is around 12 or 13 mb. Be sure to download the Windows
version from that page. :)

Thanks Zilbandy. Even though this is the vers of Java installed that the
Java website told me I had, (maybe I have read it wrong).

However, when I look at my programmes Java Folder it says I have jre 1.6.0
(75.6 MB).

In my Add Remove programmes area it says I have Java SE Runtime Env 6 which
is 108MB

Does this make sense? I'm getting confused.

Many thanks all

I'm not really sure what all is necessary. I know at one time I
downloaded a huge Java download... I think it may have been a
developers program or something. I'm not a programmer, so that's not
what I needed. My current Java folder is about 65mb. I'm going to try
an experiment and get back to you tomorrow, if all goes well. I'm
going to uninstall Java from the add/remove programs control panel,
then make sure the java folder in my program files is gone. Then, I'll
resinstall the JRE file from the page I gave you and see what happens.
I just made a backup image of my hard drive this morning, so I'm not
too worried about messing up my system. I'll let you know. :)

Ok, I deleted Java from my add / remove programs panel (said my size
was 148mb! but it wasn't). Anyway, after rebooting and reinstalling
Java RTE, my program files folder is like yours, 75.6mb and the
version is up to 1.6.0. So, it sounds to me that you're up to date,
and so am I. :)

Thanks for going to all that trouble. But it's good to know we are all up
to date with Java.
