IE6 Starts Browsing OK Then It Hangs !

N

Newsonline

I wonder if anyone can help me with a problem that's just begun - and it's driving me nuts. My OS is Windows Me.

IE6 opens up OK and will usually display a website, but when I try to navigate around it - eventually it hangs.

Ctrl-Alt-Del just gives me the "Program Not Responding, It May Be Busy or Waiting For a Response From You,or It May Have
Stopped Running" dialog box.

There doesn't appear to be any obvious spyware( checked with Ad-Aware) or virus(McAfee up to date full scan) issues
involved.

My ISPs tech support can't suggest anything, so I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could give me a few pointers...

Thanks

Steve

I have had that problem too, for a year now. The only remedy that has worked
was to start using FireFox.

Thanks for the reply Paul - Did you have any problems exporting your favourites from IE to FireFox ?
Problem seemed to start for me when I downloaded a critical security update for IE6 from the MS site.

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

No, no problems.

I do prefer IE for some things though. FTP client, for one. And a couple
other things too, that I don't remember right now.

Thanks again for the URLs. At the risk of being a PITA, here's the latest:

LSPFIX found nothing to repair.
Spy Subtract Pro 2.64 Full Scan found GPInstall.exe and cleaned it.
CW Shredder found nothing untoward.

I've received an error msg from a few sites when IE just hangs for a while - the following is an example:

Line:9
Char:2
Error: Server Execution Failed
Code:0

After the error msg is displayed, the browser unlocks, but still won't allow full access to the site.

Goes without saying that I'd be very grateful for any thoughts.

On some sites I'm able to navigate around for a while, but eventually IE freezes.
On others - for instance when I start a javascript applet running, it freezes straight away.
I removed my McAfee firewall (from Add/Remove Programs) in case it had a bearing - now I can get to my account at
McAfee, agree to their T&Cs, but as soon as I try to download the firewall software, IE just hangs and I get tat Server
Execution Failed with a Line and a char number followed by the precise McAfee URL from where (I assume) I was trying to
download the software.

Everything was fine until I downloaded:
Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 for Windows Me (KB887797)
Security Update for Windows Me (KB890175)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB889293

We all take IE for granted, but boy, when it goes wrong it's enough to make you take to drink!

You've been very helpful - any further ideas?

Many thanks

Steve

This is a new one for me. The only thing I can think of is:

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/default.asp?contentid=28001169
or
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4. See also
Error Message When You Browse the Web: An Error Has Occurred in the Script

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306831
Scripting Errors When You View Web Pages in Internet Explorer after
Installing Office 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822521

5a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

5b. Find the hijacker that caused 5a to be checked (or if none were checked,
check for hijackware anyway):
