IE6 hangs when typing in a webpage address

I have had recent problems with XP involving
the "UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME", and now when I type in a
webpage address (like www.google.com), it not only does
not fill in the "http://" for me, but it hangs up IE6
entirely, forcing me to CTRL-ALT-DEL out of the active
window. What's happenng here? Thanks.
