IE6 Server cannot be found

Hi. I had some spyware on my PC a few months ago, the kind that hijacks your
browser. I managed to get rid of spyware but IE6 still would not work, i.e.,
I get a page that says the page cannot be displayed, and the server for IE6
can't be found. I was going to try reloading IE6 and tried to un-installl it
first but the uninstall only went partway and stopped. Now my PC shows I do
not have IE6 installed, but it's still there. And I can't re-install it
either.

I am using Firefox which works fine except when I try to download programs
like iTunes, the install procedure keeps trying to access something via IE6
and the installation then aborts.

Anyone know how to get rid of IE6 completely, or why some downloads try to
use IE6 instead of Firefox when installing? I'm as sure as I can be that
there is no spyware or virus on my machine.....at least I don't think there
is!

thanks a lot.
