IE6 runs but cann't find modem connection

IE6, SP2 has been running fine for months. It suddenly pulls up 'web page
unavailable'. I have tried opening the modem connection for it and letting
it open it for itself. Neither works. I've deactivated the ethernet
connection to simplify things. Still nothing. I can successfully ping from a
dos window. I have reinstalled IE6. Any ideas?

If the problem's caused by hijackware, reinstalling IE won't help cos
Windows is what's infected.
