IE6 repair

WIN XP Home SP2. IE6. Unable to access any folders in My Computer. Understand
this requires repair of IE6. used sfc /scannow, but that insists I load
original XPhome CD. When that loads I am warned I am overwriting more up to
date windows files on the PC. I abandoned scannow. Advised elsewhere to copy
folder I386 from XP CD Rom to root of PC directory and alter registry to
point at C:\ and not the CD rom drive. Failed, scannow still asked for the XP
CD rom. How do I repair IE6 please? Do I accept the decision to overwrite PC
files from the XP Home CD and then rerun SP2 service pack?

You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start> Run and then entering
the following command in the window:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\Inf\ie.inf

*You will need to have your XP CD available*.

Some people have problems with the command line above. A small VB Script
that will execute the command for you can be downloaded here at
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_run_ie_setup.vbs. Save the file to
your hard drive and double click it to run IE Setup.

But, before repairing OE6 SP2 you will have to remove Windows XP Service
Pact 2 from Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. Then use the last

Jan I Yes thank you, I have accumulated a series of links showing ways to get
round corrupted IE6. I now have a working IE6 more by luck than anything, I
reran the last Service pack 2 IE6 update, a short one late 2004. For whatever
reason IE6 is now OK again. I have posted your reply to my favourites for
future refence if needed. Many thanks

FRank, thanks for your reply. Before trying some of the more difficult
solutions, I chanced a re-download of the last IE6 SP2 update, a short one in
late 2004. After that IE6 has worked OK! Don't know why, I am just grateful.
Thanks.
