IE6 real slow to open

S

Steven Campbell

Over the last few days ie6 has been really slow to open. If I double its
shortcut it takes at least 20 seconds before it even starts to open the
window.
It is also the same if I right click on a link and select "open in new
window"

As I said this has only started in the last couple of days. It also is the
only program that takes this long to open. I deleted the history and the
cookies in case that was interfering some how but it is still the same.

Anyone any idea?

cheers

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

See my post "IE6 SP1 Slow to Open" where I'll now post an update listing what I've done. A fellow named John and I have been driven to distraction by this problem with no solution in sight.

I just added a HOSTS file, as recommended at mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm. IE now opens immediately, as it usually did. My thanks to you and anyone else I can thank for this apparent fix for a very puzzling problem.

Continuing troubleshooting, I ran System File Checker ("c:\ sfc /scannow") and CheckDisk at a reboot("c:\ chkdsk /F /R /V".) SFC detected nothing unusual. When CheckDisk had completed its scan my video display dropped to its lowest setting. Using System Restore I restored normal operation; however, what I think of as the washed out "Safe Mode video setting" wouldn't have been triggered had things been normal
I ran, but decided to abort a Pest Patrol scan. When IE closed and I opened it again it opened normally---but only that one time. All my updated "anti" programs say the system is clean. CacheSentry, QuikfFixXP, a new HOSTS file and WinsockfixXP have had no appreciable effect that I can detect. Something must have corrupted or changed a setting in IE that it references when it first opens up. Once open, all seems normal.

Hi, I never noticed your post.
I think my problem is slightly different from yours although could be
related.
I always right click on a link and select "open in new window" so I don't
lose were I am. However that is taking about 15 / 20 seconds before it opens
a new window. Likewise when I just click on a link, it takes about 15 / 20
seconds before it attempts to the new link.

Also while the link is trying to open the new page, my current page won't
respond. It just sits with the egg timer.

The only thing different that I have done is install the Ms critical update
at the weekend.

I found the disabling "Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
under Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, (Security heading) fixed the
problem.

Sounds good. How important is this check? Is it worth having the
delay to get the check?

I'm having the same problem after installing the latest critical update(s)
over the last couple of days. A similar thing happened when I tried to
install XP SP1a, but on a much worse scale. With that anything I tried to
run took forever to launch, and would freeze on and off to the point it was
unusable. Interestingly, unplugging the network cable from my DSL modem
"cured" that problem. I unistalled SP1a and didn't have any problems again,
but was concerned that I am unable to update to SP1a. Now after the latest
security update IE starts slower than usual. So far I haven't found any
solutions to these update problems other than to not use them, which sucks.
