IE6 locks up...

(XPpro IE6 with all updates) It's been fine for ages weeks tonight, if I
click the downward pointing triangle thing, to drop down the URL slot - it
locks up and I have to Ctrl Alt Del to end task because it's not responding.
I can click in the slot / address bar to edit a web address and that's all
fine but, even after doing that, one click on that little address slot
drop-down triagle and that's it. I expect I'll have to wade through various,
"How to
repair or reinstall IE6 in XP" but, I thought I'd have a go in here !

I tried clearing out TIF folders but, they seem to be in a strange place in
XP comapred to 98

any pointers appreciated.

Your referring to the IE Addressbar dropdown menu, I believe.

The default location for many files and folders in WinXP are different than
in Win98.

See if clearing History make any difference (Tools>Internet
Options>General).

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Well, what can I say, ...other than a VERY BIG thank you...again. Clear
History cured it. I missed that one !
I know that the XP and W98 default directory locations differ considerably
by the way, ...as you may have gathered I like complaining! I charged
off all around my XP, (did a search for temp*) and deleted most of their
contents
