IE6 jumps offline during broadband connection

-- WinXP(SP2) with IE 6.0.2900.2180
-- Broadband cable Internet connection (DHCP)

Problem: Occasionally IE6 becomes unable to browse other web sites; either
via hyperlinked text or via correctly entered URL in its Address window.
When this occurs, the pointer will display a "no" icon (black circle with
diagonal line thru it) adjacent to it when positioned over hyperlinked text.
However, an offline icon will *not* appear in IE's status bar, which may
cause you confusion. This nuisance has been observed to sometimes occur
after a mistyped URL is entered in IE6's Address field.

Solution: From menubar, File > uncheck Work Offline

Note: The network connection status remains OK while the nuisance occurs.
Commands such as ipconfig and tracert will reveal normally expected
connection info throughout the nuisance.

I have seen third-party communication software fiddle with
the GlobalUserOffline registry value for whatever reason
it has. Usually it is the opposite of your case (e.g the software
unconditionally clears it so it is impossible for the user to stay
in a Working Offline state while connected.

Try using RegMon to monitor that variable and see which
program is changing its state.

Good luck

Thanks. I just downloaded Regmon 6.12 ...

Earlier this morning I observed a slightly more annoying nuisance about
IE6's offline tendency: After unchecking Work Offline, when I clicked a
web page hyperlink I discover that IE6 immediately reverted again to
offline mode. I tried closing and reopening IE6, but to no avail. Then I
restarted the computer... problem still persisted. I then discovered that
the only way to at least temporarily get IE6 out of offline mode was to do
it via Outlook Express 6, as the two programs share some functionality. So
after double-clicking Work Offline in OE6's status bar, the IE6 mode of
operation switched to online and I was able to surf the web again.
