There are no entries in the version of IE6 on my wife's account although in
internet options she has it set to keep entries for 20 days.

that thing never seems to work the way it's supposed to . Check the
AutoComplete settings. If nothing is checked in there, then nothing will be
saved.
Go to Internet Options>content tab> AutoComplete.

I can register the dll file on my (administrator) account, but IE6 is
working OK there. I cannot register the file on my wife's account, where the
problem is - if that's what I have to do - presumably because hers is a
limited account. Actually, she used to have an administrator account until I
decided a few weeks ago that it would be better for there to be only one
administrator account - mine. Funnily enough, the same problem exists on the
other administrator accounts that I converted to limited accounts, but not
on the Guest account, which has always been limited. I don't know whether
this has anything to do with my current problems but I suspect it has.

No matter how many accounts you have there is only one SHDOCVW.DLL that gets
used. If it registered once, in any account, then it doesn't need to be
registered again.

Maybe one of the following might help.

[[History - Not Being Saved
McAfee gave this solution to the bug where VirusScan 6 stops your Internet
Explorer History file working. Hope it is of some help:

Open VirusScan console
Select "Pick a task..."
Select "Change my VirusScan settings"
Select "Configure VShield background scanning"
Select "Customise your VShield settings"

Select the "Internet Filter" icon from the icons down the left hand side On
the "Detection" tab, in the 'Applet filters' section, remove the tick next
to "ActiveX Controls".]]
