IE6 Freeze from Popup Links

I'm running IE6 on Windows ME.
Whenever I click on a webpage link that would normally result in a separate
window popping up (like clicking a poll on ESPN.com and having the results
come up in a separate window), IE freezes, with the pointer being frozen in
the hand shape. The only way I can close the window is by hitting
Ctrl+Alt+Del and clicking End Task repeatedly.
I've scanned my computer with fully updated Norton Anti-Virus 2005, and
fully updated Yahoo Anti-Spy, and neither has reported anything that is
causing this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck.
I uninstalled IE 6 (and went back to IE 5.5), and tried to reinstall, but
that made the problem worse.
Whenever I go to either the Windows Update page or Microsoft's IE download
page, I get a "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close" error box.
I clicked on the details link on the error box and got the following:

Error details: Internet Explorer has encountered an internal error.

Error signature
AppName: iexplore.exe
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1505
AppVer: 5.51.3020.2100
Offset: 001da8ae
ModName: mshtml.dll

I'm utterly clueless at this point.

Okay. I successfully reinstalled IE6, but I am still having the same
troubles with IE6 freezing whenever I click on a website link that opens a
seperate window.

Ted,
Have you ran any Spyware detection software on your PC? You may need to get
rid of something that has been installed on your PC. The following programs
and links, should be helpful.

Ad-Aware:

Spybot: Search and Destroy:
