I have been having troubles with IE for a long time. It
all started with pop ups, my wife decided to try to
uninstall IE, but she did this incorrect. Now I can't
install or uninstall IE. I have downloaded the newest IE
from microsoft.com, and when I try to install it, it tells
me that a newer version is installed and it can't continue.
I don't know how this is possible because my old version
was 5.something. If I go into my control pnl and try to
uninstall it, it doesn show IE and then has Q832894 after
it. When I click remove it comes up with "this program
uninstalles q832894 and restores your previous version. If
I click continue nothing happens, and IE still stays there.
To sum up my problem I now do not have a working version
of IE, which is required for help on microsoft office or
word, etc. I can't uninstall the version that is on my
computer and my computer will not allow me to install the
newest IE out. If anyone has any advice short of doing a
compleat reset please reply.

I was having a major problem with IE6 also, so I installed
Netscape so I could access the Internet (I wasn't able to
even read these posts with IE6 - everything came up as
gibberish). It's not hard to download another browser --
then you have the resources to fix IE and you can keep them
both on your computer (no harm) and use either one (or both).

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads5.html go down the
page and find "Netscape" (it's free). I think they send
you to a "mirror site" to download it, but that's what I
did and it's all safe. Microsoft won't like me posting
this news, but I had to have Netscape to get the info. from
this support site to find all I needed to go back in and
fix my IE Browser so, what can I say?

Bill,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html It's
been
the most helpful with this problem. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it
could be downloaded from another machine onto a floppy disk.

You may need to follow up with Ad-aware and/or Spybot S&D. Both programs
should be updated after installation- before use.
See: Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Also note security tips at that site.

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

This can be fixed. Please reply back to this thread if you need more help.
