this, thanks...

This is probably being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)

Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:
The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

If not caused by malware, consider disabling (for diagnostic purposes)
legitimate programs running in the background which might be interacting
with IE- security, antivirus, ad-blockers, toolbars & other add-ons, etc.
You may have to uninstall then reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

Hope this helps,
Don

I had the same problem, and after cleaning all the adware the Spysweeper
could find, rebooting, reinstalling IE6 AND Windows, I ended up turning off
the thriparty enabler, and lo and behold, I can close it again! (Somewhere
there's still a piece of adware in there that my Spysweeper hasn't found)

Here's how you can turn off that and get your IE back:

Open your browser, go to "Tools", then "Internet Options". Click on the
"Advanced" tab, and then scroll down to the "Browsing" area. If there is a
checkmark in the box "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
restart)", clear that checkmark, hit "Apply" and "OK" and then close your
browser. Reboot your machine.
