IE6 crashes on win2k (upgraded from win me)

Hi,

If IE6's opening page is different from about:blank, it crashes.
Anyhow, if I open a Windows Explorer and then send it to any page on
the internet, everything is fine; it is possible to continue surfing,
but once a new instance (or window) is initiated by a javascript, the
new window crashes.

I have already tried reinstalling, uninstalling/reinstalling (prior to
upgrade to win2k SP3, now it is impossible to uninstall), ran
sfc/scannow (nothing happened, just checked some dll but did not report
anything).

I don't plan using IE6, but it is needed for Windows Update to work!!

As far as I can remember, the last time IE6 worked normally was prior
to an error caused by Dr. Watson that caused my PC to reboot. After
that, I disabled Dr. Watson with Zone Alarm.

If some has some idea to fix this, or a workaround to get windows
updates without IE6, please let me know.

This is what I get on the Event Viewer log:

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Internet
Explorer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the
necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages
from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event:
iexplore.exe, 6.0.2800.1106, unknown, 0.0.0.0, c4115988.

The description for Event ID ( 1001 ) in Source ( Microsoft Internet
Explorer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the
necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages
from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event:
229651484.

And this is the error on Event Viewer if Dr. Watson is enabled:

The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on
09/23/2005 @ 17:40:10.893 The exception generated was c0000005 at
address 011068AC (<nosymbols>)

Thanks!

1. Dr. Watson does NOT cause errors. It keeps track of them.

2. First eliminate any spyware.

won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function

Thanks for your suggestions, Frank.

Unfortunately, the PC in question is from my parents (they live in US
and I live in Mexico) and I can't access it right now (forgot to
install some remote access software).

Anyway, I had already blocked and uninstalled all spyware (by means of
Spybot Search & Destroy and ZoneAlarm), and still Explorer crashed.

I'll try to instruct my sister to install the winsockfix you mention
and try to get a HiJackThis log from the PC.

Thanks again.
