IE6 crashes on accessing document

Whenever I point IE6 at a link on a site that goes to a
document (eg a .doc) then as soon as it has got the
document (in a new Word window) then I get the "Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem......" bit, and both
IE6 and Word close down.

Grateful for any suggestions. (I have W98 SE and Word
2000).

Are you using a popup blacker?
It could be blocking the new window that is required to open the .doc.

If all fails rule out parasites.
