IE6 connection problem.

I recently re-installed WinXP Pro due to a major system upgrade
(LanParty sli-dr, A64 3500+, x850xt), and from the beginning, when I
open IE, it displays something about proxy settings at the bottom of
the page (detecting proxy settings I believe), and can't find the
page. I am of course given the option of working offline or to try
again, and try again always works. The failure only occours
(seemingly) the first time I try and use IE after bootup, even if it's
an hour after bootup. My mail prog (pegasus mail), newsreaders (agent
and grabbit), azerus, and about every other program work flawlessly at
all times. Sometimes using another prog before trying IE makes IE work
the first time. Also, until it does work, the network icon near the
clock does not show up. My connection is a cable modem, and the
computer connects to it through a router, and the router has been
completely ruled out as the problem. This behavior occours regardless
of which network adapter on the board I use (There are 2 on this
board). I've talready applied all the winXP and hardware updates,
including the bios. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks

Update: I unchecked the "automatically detect settings" from Lan
settings in IE->Tools_> connection, and although I do not get the
"detecting proxy settings", IE still does not connect to the 'net on
first try. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks

Upon reinstalling WinXP, did you enable the Windows Firewall or a
third-party firewall before connecting to the internet?

Did you install a reliable and updated anti-virus application?

Did you check in at Windows Update and install all offered updates *before*
otherwise using the internet?

Have you tried reinstalling the cable modem (and then the router)?

A router and sygate personal firewall.
Did you install a reliable and updated anti-virus application? yes

Did you check in at Windows Update and install all offered updates *before*
otherwise using the internet? yes

Have you tried reinstalling the cable modem (and then the router)?
Not sure what you mean by re-install, since there's no drivers for
either, and both have been up and another computer using them since
before the upgrade.

The system has been scanned, it's not a virus or spyware problem, and
like I stated, it has behaved like this since literally 3 minutes
after the winxp install.

My connection is a cable modem

What protocol is used by your cable modem?
(e.g. PPPoE?) What software driver?

See Sandi Hardmeier's help site for more explanation.

Also I think you should be able to get better assistance from your
provider or in a newsgroup which specializes in problems with your
provider or in a newsgroup which specializes in networking for your OS.

Good luck
