IE6 Browser won't open .pdf files

Just shows an empty window with the .pdf place holder. I
can right click and save the target, but why is my system
doing this?

usually pdf files are opened with adobe acrobat reader.
Have you tried that. it can be downloaded from many
websites. with a simple search. IE downloads.com
 
Also check you don't have "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" disabled here:
Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Internet -> Custom Level

I keep mine set to "prompt" rather than "enabled".
