IE6 Back Button Stopped Working

M

Matt W.

We've got a computer running Win2K, SP4 with IE6 SP1.
(All the latest patches as of yesterday.) About a week
ago IE's back button just stopped working. I've got no
info on what precipitated it, just that it stopped
working.

The button is available & depresses as it should when
clicked on, but the browser does not respond in any way.
Also, if your right-click on the button, it does show all
previous sites visited but if you select one, it does not
go there.

I've turned off
Tools/Internet_Options/Advanced/Browsing/Enable 3rd party
browser extensions - no effect. Also uninstalled &
reinstalled IE6 - no joy. Also ran Adaware with no effect.

I'm kind of stumped here. Has anyone ran into this
before? Any advice?

Thanks much.

Yeah, one of these days, real soon now, I'm gonna tear out the MS stuff that
came with the system and put in a new browser, a new newsreader/mail-thingy,
a new..... heck, maybe linux.

But for now, I did try changing those options, and the site still traps me.
BUT, your hint about right-clicking on the back button at least lets me back
out of it (once I've figured out what's going on) instead of flushing the
browser. Thanks!

But that begs the question -- WHAT BRAIN-DEAD DORFLE-WHACKER AT MICROSOFT
DESIGNED EXPLORER SO A SITE DESIGNER COULD HIJACK THE BACK BUTTON?!?! AND
WHY DON'T THEY FIX THAT?

<rant on> And I rilly, rilly have to wonder about web designers who think
that if I can't get out of their site I'm going to buy something just 'cause
I'm stuck there. What the ef are they thinking? I guess maybe they're
counting on the income from extra instances of ads (although I don't think
the site had those -- it was basically a topical list of books with pointers
to amazon) and neglecting the ill will such policy generates. <rant off>

Not that it fixes the problem, but...

Mozilla works beatifully! <g> Tabbed windows and the
ability to block popups right from within the browser
settings rock! A reason to switch?...

Hey Matt, my back button didn't stop working permanently, but I was getting
frustrated with one of those sites that traps your browser and re-routes the
back button. Sounds like your hint below might help, and whle turning off
that "enable 3rd party browser extensions" I found a couple more that look
kind of dangerous [why, oh why, doesn't MS turn this stuff OFF by default?].
Well, now to reboot and see if that works :).
