IE wont download files

[Intrepid]

All,

I am experiencing a strange problem. My IE (or any replacement like
Maxthon or Avance) won't download any files when I click on the link.
It opens a new window (or tab if using Maxthon) and displays a red
cross in the upper left corner. If I use "Save link as" it works fine,
if I use Firefox it also words fine but I want to use IE as intended
too.

I tried lots of things like reinstalling IE, setting everything to
default settings, clearing cache and temp files, cleaning the
registry, everything except reinstalling Windows.

Does anyone have a clue? I would be very grateful.

As I said in my original post, this works. It soesn't solve the
strange problem though...
