IE Won't Browse

Win2K SP4 5.00.2195
IE 6.0.2800.1106 SP1
all the latest patches

Suddenly IE won't open an Internet URL. The browser just sits & spins ...
for HOURS with no error message. All other http functions work fine~e.g
connecting to a remote PC via GoToMyPC & having a remote PC connect into
this one, ftp works fine, browsing to local (inside the LAN) pages works
fine. E-mail (OE6) works fine except there are no graphics in any of the
messages.

We DO have a corporate firewall & proxy server, but every other PC on the
LAN can browse just fine.
There is no firewall software running on this PC.

Anybody have ANY idea what might be causing this?

Clear your caches, delete of your offline/internet files and cookies.
Scan for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Then Open a Run command and type this:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll click [OK]
Reboot your machine and see if the URL or the link will open.
Anothe try th File association on Folder Options >> File Types.
HTH.

BTDT. all caches clear, all cookies deleted, purged temp folders, ran
Ad-Aware & Spybot-S&D
all the IE file associations are correct.
registering urlmon.dll did not help

One thing I have noticed is that I can browse to https pages (SSL secure
pages). These seem to work fine. It's is just the standard pages that
won't come up.

I see that Bluto in another thread (IE6 opens only https-SSL pages) in this
newsgroup is having the same problem. Could it be some IE update is to
blame?

Hi David,
Try this and let us know:
On the IE Properties click on Advanced and check these boxes
[&] HTTP 1.1 Settings
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
If you using proxy check the proxy one if not check only the first one.

Then under Security Option:
[&] Security
[ ] Use SSL 2.0
[ ] Use SSL 3.0
[ ] Use STL 1.0
If the Above are checked may I suggest to uncheck them and Reboot twice your
Machine then check them back and Reboot.

Changing these settings did not make any difference.
we had HTTP 1.1, SSL 2.0 & SSL 3.0 already checked.

BTW, it is the NON-secure pages that won't open. The secure pages
(https-SSL) DO open.

thx

Hello, David & nass,
I had same conditions, during my non-secured-links-blackout: everything was unchecked and checked again and then verified "normal". But nothing changed until when all sequentially started to work fine. By itself.
Maybe did nass' theory about "give it a kick in the ass" work well ?
Eventually, no clues about WHAT started to work badly and then changed again to health...
Ok, let's go on kicking Windows in its ass, it seems to be always a good procedural path.
Good chances to you all.

Hi Bluto,
Glad I was the cause to solve your problem, but the theory is; if you Kicked
it hard you will damag it!!<g>.
Meaning, Sometimes things get confused, how, System can read cached Settings
hidden somewhere unseen for us and the PC still think these the Orders and
commands that It should take/execute in consideration/Implementation first
otherwise it will be Kicked <g>.
So by Undoing these and Redoing it again you refreshed the System Settings
and eliminate/rid of the confusion.
The confusion can be caused by Third-Party Security Settings and that Third
Party no longer active or functioning on your PC (uninstalled but left it
finger *up* prints, just to say I will be back) I could be wrong/Mistakos you
never know as it is not the case in David scenario, may be.
User Fault, which come over the time not at once or in one moment can cause
this, say if you changed a settings or accept to change the settings when you
installed an Update or a application software.
Update can cause this behavior for security reason.
A Broken Links/files in the system can lead to a Myhem and confusion.

HTH.
Have a nice christmas kicking [Caking] ;-).
Season Greetings.
Regards,
nass
