IE will not connect to any Internet site asfter download of MS security updates

I loaded the latest security patches for Windows XP home
editon from Microsoft and once installed and the PC
rebooted, I can dial up by ISP BUT Internet Explore
cannot (will not) connect to any website -- I just get
then message connectin unavailable. It wil NOT allow a
connection to any web site through my wireless card
either (I do have a strong signal from my home access
point).
This security install also deleted or overwrote my back
up point for it is no longer available either so I am
unable to return to a point prior to thsi patch install
when I could access web site through IE.

Am I missing having to reset something although my IE
setting seem to appear as they were before and I do
establish a connectin with my ISP.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed to resolve this
frustrating problem.

Thanks

Hi - did you download any driver updates from Windows Update? That's a
no-no - causes problems.
If not - try troubleshooting:

Once connected to the Internet, go to a command prompt and type

ipconfig /all <enter>

Try to ping the IP address of your default gateway first - does that work?
If so,
Try to ping your DNS server's IP address - does that work? If so,
Try to ping www.yahoo.com - do you get replies?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I do not believe I downloaded any drivers. All appeared
to be security updates.

I did connect to my ISP (ATT dial up).
I tried to ping their IP adress and go no response other
than times out on 4 tries.

I did ping www.yahoo.com and got 4 replies.

Internet explrer just keep showing site unavailable.
could not connect to my ATT.net (ISP) or to www.yahoo.com
or any other web site I try.

Problem is still there.

I also tried the network trouble shooter in Network
connection but that says problem is unresolved or
something to that effect.

Hi,

I had the same problem for a few weeks now and can't seem
to find the reason for this happening but at least, until
I do find the solution, I found by going into Tools--
internet options--connections and click on ALWAYS dial a
connection, then apply---then in settings, check off
AUTOmatically detact settings and then again in LAN
Settings do the same. Close tools and refresh a web page &
see if it connects. Not exactly a solution as to why its
doing it but at least get you (me) connected til I stumble
upon a fix! Hope this helps!

Hi Glory:

Thank you.
I used your fix and it did work.
At least I can use the computer again to search the net.

Perhaps at some point someone will find out what the
problem is that causes this difficulty.

My thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Have a great evening.
