IE Will No Longer Launch or Start

I am running XP Pro, SP2 and for some reason IE will no longer launch. I was
using the browser, hit Ctrl+N to open a new window, and my IE window closed.
When I tried to relaunch nothing happened other than a brief appearance by
the hourglass - no error messages, no event log entry, nothing. I've
rebooted, reinstalled IE, and scanned for viruses, but nothing seems to work.
The weird thing is that if I open up Windows Explorer and type a URL in the
navigation bar I can access websites without any trouble. However, clicking
on a link that tries to open a new browser window or hitting Ctrl+N will
cause the window to disappear. Help!

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

I ran everything without much luck. Spybot finds 5 registry keys that are
marked as DSO Exploits. I told it to remove these and it reported success,
but after rebooting the system I still can not launch IE and when I searched
again with Spybot it found DSO Exploits again.
