MowGreen,

I have no OEM*.inf files that are 0 bytes and I do not
have a _restore folder present.
what do you suggest?

Ian

Ian,

Go here :

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6 sp1/download.asp

Before downloading , temporarily disable Norton Firewall. By your first
post it appears that you have downloaded the setup package for IE but a
3rd party software (Norton) is preventing you from successfully
downloading the components for it.
If the INSTALLATION of IE6 SP1 is not occurring it could be traced to
either 1,000's of 0 byte OEM*.inf files present in the WINDOWS\Inf
folder or corruption of the System Restore hierarchy. Check the
WINDOWS\Inf folder for the presence of the 0 byte OEM*.inf files, if
they are present, delete them. Check the _Restore folder by right
clicking it and seeing if there are 6x,xxx files in it.
If so, I will post instructions on how to correct this.
Post back with the amount of files you find.

Ian,

Do you see a message "unable to install all components..."?

If you do, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee
