IE redirects itself

Recently, my IE 6.0 finishes loading a website and
immediately redirects itself to IP address 1127.0.0.01,
which I have been told is my own computer. The problem is
that, of course, it won't find a website there so I get
the unable to find page error. This happens with several
websites, and only happens in my computer (it is not the
websites' code). It is really annoying since I have to
stop the page from loading if I want to read something, or
else it will just redirect itself after loading. Any
clues on how to fix this? I don't remember messing up
with any of my internet options recently, but something
might have happened when I clicked a link on a friend's
profile and later on he told me it was an AOL virus.
Norton antivirus came out clean....so I do not know if it
has any relation or not. Anyhow, how can I fix this
problem?

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Did you mean 127.0.0.1?
otherwise it wrong.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

The exact and complete error message is important.

Fernando,
Symtom: Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or DNS Error

In the event you can not access a site and you believe it
may be due to an entry in the HOSTS file.

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS file "on-the-fly".
Download: RenHosts.bat

[more info]
Check the URL first! It may be taking you to somewhere you don't want
to go! Yes webmasters can fudge the URL displayed in the lower left
corner of your browser. When you are not sure - right-click the link
and select: Copy Shortcut - paste to Notepad.

If it is a HOSTS problem, shouldn't I be totally unable to
load the website? The thing is that the website loads,
and just when it has finished loading, the redirection
occurs. I also opened the HOSTS file and found no
reference at all to any of the sites giving me trouble.

Fernando,
What web site? Some of it may be loading from another server,
or your HOSTS file may contain a "redirect" .......

Can you "ping" the site?
If you get a "127.0.0.1" message than it's an entry in your HOSTS file.

Have you tried renaming the HOSTS file?

I have somewhat of a related problem but not quite the same. Since the
day I switched to AOL, suddenly IE 6.0 has quit working for almost
all sites not any one in particluar.
It only brings up sites starting with https://
and not the larger pool of http:// sites.
I end up with similar symptoms as going to 127.0.0.1 and then saying
site not found etc.
I already checked my hosts file (discussed in this thread) and found
no problem there.
I have tried updating IE, deleting cookies, deleteing temp files,
reistalling AOL stuff like uninstall AOL adapter etc.
Basically IE6. does not work at all expcet for https:// sites.
