IE Program Icons & Mozilla

Hello - A few weeks ago I downloaded Mozilla. After a few days, I decided I
didn't like it and uninstalled it from my computer. Since then I 've noticed
several things and now seem to have a problem. The little blue 'e' in the
address bar has changed to a rectangular box with a red & a blue dot in it;
I've noticed that a similar symbol which looks like a white rectangular box
with several colored dots has replaced program symbols when I go to Start>All
Programs..such as if I want to open Adobe it has that icon instead of the
Adobe icon. When I want to create a shortcut on my desktop ex: if I'm on the
Wash Post website and I drag the address to the desktop - when I did that the
other day, it created a shortcut but with the mozilla symbol instead of the
little blue 'e' even though this was after I'd uninstalled Mozilla. Tonight,
my daughter sent me an IM with a link to an article, I couldn't open it & a
dialogue box came up that said it couldn't find something to do with Mozilla.
I'm guessing that when I installed Mozilla that it took over some important
functions of IE and now IE isn't working properly. What can I do to get back
to the normal functions of IE? Computer is 4 months old; IE was a preload and
I'm using XP.

IE-Tools-Internet Options-Programs.
Check the box "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the
default browser"
Close IE and reopen it.

In short, stick to Alan's advice.

Mozilla is notoriously nasty when it comes to taking over file type
extensions. Forcing IE to take back associations is the only thing that
really works (from personal experience). All that stuff posted by Jan was
irrelevant.

To force Netscape to release control:

Close Netscape. Edit prefs.js by adding the following in user pref:

("browser.wfe.ignore def check", true);

Go to IE tools, internet options, programs. Set IE to check if it is default
browser. Close and start IE. Select 'yes' when prompted.

Open Netscape; it will prompt to be made default browser. Select no, turn
on the option to not ask anymore.
