IE only bmp, no jpg etc also scripting error

XP Pro Media Center Ver 2000 Service Pack 2...

8 days ago suddenly I was unable to save pics on the web in any format other
than bmp PLUS when I sought help in IE an error comes up stating "an error
has occured in the script on this page" line 2; Char 1; error Invalid
Character; code 0; url
mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINDOWS\Help\iexplore.chm::/iegetsrt.htm
This type of error is popping up in OE, (only a few messages affected) as I
scroll through my messages.
1)Have cleared my cache(files & objects) and ensured the box in
tools>adavanced is unchecked for "save encrypted content to my hard drive".
2)checked and verified the registry for jpeg/jpg content etc - a ok
3)Have created a new profile as per MS article 811151 - no resolution for my
problem. A new profile without my Doc being transferred into this new profile
works just fine but as soon as I bring the luggage in, well you know what
happens.

Many hours on the phone, web and no solution yet - ideas welcome

Hi David :)

You might take a look at the following and see if it will help:

Cannot save images in proper format

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

also..

Open IE and for testing purposes,
Go to http://www.jpeg.org/
Right click on one of the pictures and click on 'Save picture as...'
Verify that proper file name is shown and the type is JPEG (*.jpg)
No need to actually save the picture if not wanted -

Hope this helps :)

1: That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE
click Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary
Internet files section of the General tab. On the next window place a check
mark in the box to Delete all offline content.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and scroll
down to the Security section. Uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to
disk".

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

Hi Jan,

Have done all the items you mentioned except for
"Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)"

One thing that bugs me is that after trying to save a web jpeg as a jpeg and
only managing to save as bmp, I was not able to locate the bmp anywhere other
then the folder I set as it's new home. ie not in any cache I could see.

Tell me, my thought is that I possibly (sound sure of myself huh?) have
some corruption originating from a program or data stored under my user
profile. My next ardous task is to transfer all this information into a new
user profile, folder by foldr all the while checking to see what file
contaminates the new profile, then trouble shoot the folder further. What do
u think??

Hi Frank,

Please tell me why "This problem may occur if the Hhctrl.ocx file is the
wrong version."
How would I get the wrong version when the computer is 6 wks old and worked
fine until 8 days ago? I don't get it. There is only one help file affected,
IE>contents & index.
Service Bulletin MS03 - 004 offers an end user bulletin link
http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/200302_windows.mspx that takes me
to Windows security Updates for Feb/03 regarding Security Bulletin
MS03-004>Windows XP>Get more information in the technical bulletin>Technical
details >Mitigating factors:

• An attacker would require the ability to log onto the system interactively
in order to run programs that use the Windows Redirector. This vulnerability
cannot be exploited remotely.

• Windows XP systems that are not shared between users would not be at risk.

I am the sole user.
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)
is the same as locating the info on the registry and checking the specifics
for jpeg/jpg/bmp etc, isn't it?

I have exhausted tech support at Toshiba; currently working with an engineer
at MS. we even reinstalled the scripting engine plus a whack of other things
that I have probably forgottn.

Your comments are appreciated - David

Hello PA Bear

I may not have done all that the page you sent suggests one do and perhaps
not in that order but from running over ir briefly I would say that all is
taken care of. I have a firewall, Zone Alarm Pro, AV and regularily empty my
cache and search for adware, malicious code, spyware on a daily basis. I am
running out of options me thinks...

I believe IE is fine regarding saving photos and the scripting error since
neither of these complaints happen when I create a different profile, well at
least until I copy all my luggage into it:)

Hi David :)

Not sure this might apply in your case, but, as you metnion having ZA Pro it
might be worth a try, you've tried most everything else. :)

Zone Alarm Pro can block Images in IE

1. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>reset custom
level to Medium or Low
2. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>set the slider to Medium or Low
3. Go to this site and read on adjusting the Privacy settings in ZA. It will
explain how to customize on a per site basis.
http://www.donhoover.net/privacy.html

Hope this helps :)

Hi Jan,

I will go look at the link you sent - before I got into this as deeply as i
am i first of all took ZA & AV out of the equation.
I just don't know. I have been sitting here loading profile after profile
where I add the data from my primary profile a folder or file at a time.
Thought I had isolate dthe issue but no. As soon as i loaded the suspect
folder into a new profile, get this, I was upset because everything worked
fine:) Not the result I was looking for.

Any real little settings or what have yous that need addressing that you may
think of? I ran across a good idea that I had forgotten: use a limited
profile to use daily. That way the main profile is not in the strike zone if
you catch a $%^

Thanks for your comments thus far - winded david

You started by posting two questions, Which are we on now, I am not clear
1. Saving pictures is BMP only, or
2. Mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\Windows\Help\

Did you, indeed, empty the TIF?

G

Yes indeed I have cleared the TIF, plus much more if you care to review the
dialogue to see. Both questions remain active as no solution has appeared
thus far. It maybe a good idea if you read the preceeding since lots of the
suggestions are duplications. Thanks

Hi David :)

The only other suggestion I have, and don't know if it will be of any help,
is to go to the IE Security Zones and reset everything to Default settings
and see if that helps. Something somewhere there may have gotten crossed
up.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security tab
Click on Internet and Trusted and Restricted Zones one at a time click the
Default level or Default Settings, whichever you have.

That should return everything in those areas to the default settings, and
maybe that might help. The others have covered most all of the primary
causes and remedies for this type of problem, and that is the only thing I
can think of to try.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Jan,
One question that still needs answered is this process you suggested to me,
Cannot save images in proper format

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

---what does it do? I've checked MS & Google but am not :) with info. Does
it go through the registry and ensure values etc are set properly for file
extensions? If so I did that manually. If not, what does it do??

It puts the proper entries into the Registry so that Windows can use the
Dynamic Link Libraries.
