IE not opening Media Player when clicking on .ASX files

Having a problem with IE. For some reason, it will not open Media Player when
I click on a link to an .ASX file

This is from the ORB website (in case you don't know ORB, its a way to
stream media).

If I download the .ASX file and then click on it, it will open media player.
(therefore its associated with media player). However, when I click on the
link in IE, I get a window that opens and closes instantaneously. I can't
even see what kind of window it is.

I'm stuck at this point. I know it has nothing to do with my network (as it
streams fine to realplayer), and it streams fine to media player if I click
on the link after i have downloaded it.

Any suggestions how to make IE open media player when clicking on .ASX file?

thanks
mike

Wish I had the answer Mike, because IE is not opening .WMV movie files
correctly anymore for me. Sounds like the same problem, but with different
file extensions.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Thanks!

Mike,

I figured out the answer to my problem:

I opened Windows Media Player, TOOLS>OPTIONS>FILE TYPES. Unchecked the box
for .wmv and clicked "APPLY". Then rechecked the box and when I clicked
"APPLY" again, a small DOS box opened quickly and then closed. After that,
the file association was restored and .WMV links open once again in Windows
Media Player. :)

Perhaps if you try the same steps with the .ASX extension instead of .WMV it
will work for you too.

Good Luck!

thanks for the reply John.
I hadn't tried that because if I clicked on the ASX file from windows
explorer, it would open media player, but it would be worth a try.

anyway, i reinstalled media player and it solved the problem. i read
somewhere on the KB site about some ASX handling errors with previous
versions of windows, so i figured i'd give it a go and it worked!

cheers
mike
