IE loses web access after a couple of minutes

I have recently had to run Repair on a Windows XP installation following a
virus attack. This necessitated me re-applying SP 2 and numerous other
updates. Having done this, the PC now functions ok in all other respects but
when I try to browse the internet or pick up email using Outlook it starts
off ok but the performance rapidly deteriorates and after about three minutes
I have no web or email access. This PC is sharing its Internet connection and
the other PC has no problems with accessing the Internet. I have tried
transferring the PC to another network and using that network's Internet
connection but I get the same problem.
If I run ipconfig/release followed by ipconfig/renew I regain access, but
only for a few minutes.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
