IE is eating up all my memory

It's like this. Every so often, my computer grinds to a performance halt.
My CPU usage says 100%, and in Processes, one extra application of IE is
running and eating about 45 to 60K of memory.

In other words, if I only have 1 IE window open, I might see 2 iexplorers in
the Task Manager. If I'm not on the internet at all, sometimes 1 iexplorer
will pop up and kill the memory.

It's easy enough to end the application and restore performance, but it
happens frequently. Does anybody have a guess as to why? And what to do
about it?

Thanks for your help.

Usually with high CPU or memory problems like youre having, microsoft
techs would probably start with MsConfig utility, you can use it to solve
youre problems in kb310560

I got the antispyware and the antivirus scanner, ran them both, quarantined
the files they recommended, which seemed to cure the problem until I restart.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
