IE is corrupted, how to replace it?

I use Wal-Mart connect as ISP. It uses an IE based browser by AOL that is
cumbersome. Until recently, accordingly, I've used IE opened on top of the
WMConnect browser. Now I get a message that says something about a Visual
C++ runtime error when I try to open IE. The help desk at WMConnect (really
Compuserve) says IE is corrupted, but how do I fix this? I can't figure out
how to uninstall the "corrupted" IE (and I have XP service pack 2).

Boot using the WIndows XP installation CD and use its Repair option to
perform an in-place upgrade. I haven't been able to find a "network
install" download for IE that contains the entire setup program for awhile,
and it sounds like you might not be able to use IE to get another browser or
to go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6
to download (which is just the setup program that downloads all the other
files) and install it again.

Sounds like you have SP-2 installed. If the install CD doesn't have SP-2
slipstreamed into it (and you don't make your own), you'll need to do the
repair and then rerun Windows Update to get back to the same patch level.

I found the 95% of the problems with IE/OE 6 can be fixed with
'Winsockxpfix.exe'.

Unfornately, in 95% of the corruption problems with IE, I've found that
there is no way to repair it - you have to reinstall the OS.

Yea, I've read it all, done all the patches, updates, reinstallations
plans, etc.. Even had MS on the phone for 2 hours one evening with a
clients machine - the only way to repair it was to wipe/reinstall the OS
- I could have done a repair/reinstall, but with a compromised machine
there is no reason to repair/reinstall as you don't know if there is a
lingering malware on the machine.

The winsock fix only works for a corrupt stack, it has little to do with
a corrupt IE.
