IE icon will not open IE

Hi everyone,

Since about two weeks ago now, I can not bring up IE using icons on my
desktop. The only way I can get it to come up is to go to my desktop and
right click on "My network Places", then go down to "explore". When the list
in the folder comes up, I can double click on IE there and it will come up.
This tells me my program is not corrupt (which, by the way, I have
uninstalled and reinstalled at least 3 times trying to fix this problem).
When I double click on the icon on the desktop, it makes the sound as if the
program is opening, then it immediately makes the sound like it is shutting
down. Nothing ever pops up or anything. It just immediately tries to open,
then immediately closes.

I have done every scan that I have seen everyone suggest to check for
hijackers, trojans, viruses, etc., etc.

I have also done all the checks on my system settings as people have
suggested in my previous posts. Everything has been set correctly.

I have Windows 2000 Professional and Internet Explorer 6.0 with the service
pak download. I have not installed anything onto my computer (except the
service pak when this all started happening) in the last few months - so I
know this is not a result of any new installation. Actually I have done
nothing different than usual. All of a sudden it did this!

The reason I am grasping for a solution is because in the past 5 days or so
(since I posted this question on another message board), I have had over 10
people e-mail me privately saying that they too have recently had this
problem with not being able to open IE from their icon. So something is going
on! I searched the microsoft site as recent as last Friday to see if I could
find an announcement about this problem. I didn't find anything.

Also, I do not know if this will help - but if I open more than one IE
window, I can not go back and forth from window to window from the toolbar
icons. I have to minimize each window and then I can pick whichever window I
want to maximize. It is all too time consuming and frustrating!

Can anyone help? I am by no means even close to an expert when it comes to
computers. But I can follow directions if anyone has any ideas. I would
GREATLY appreciate it!

In IE go to Tools | Internet Options | Programs and click "Reset Web
settings". Uncheck the box to reset the Home page.

OK - I did this and still I can not double click on the desktop icon and
have IE open. It still makes the same noises and shuts itself down instantly.
UGH!

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

What kind of icons? Right-click one and look at its menu.
What is the default menu item? If Open is not bold you would have
an explanation for your symptom.

Choose Properties. Find the information from there to try to simulate
what you think that icon should be doing for you. E.g. copy and paste
a URL into the Run... dialog and see what happens.

You can further simulate what the Run... dialog is doing for you
by checking the type of URL or the type of shortcut you are trying
to execute, then looking under Folder Options to find out what
the actual program being executed would be and the parameters
it would be passed.

I will try the suggestions and post the results. I will not be able to do
this until Thursday (have to work 12 hour shifts Tuesday and Wednesday). But
I will get back with you. Thanks for all the help in advance!

DJ

PS - Robert, when I right click on the icon, the "open" is in bold.

Frank,

I tried all of your suggestions. I am back to where I started from. I am so
frustrated! Any more suggestions? If not, that's fine. I will try anything at
this point.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
