ie has stoppped working

I just installed a new Linksys wireless router which seems to be working
ok, but since this installation, Internet explorer no longer
communicates with the Internet.
Firefox works fine.
Both worked initially.
I tried to update IE but windows wants to use IE to do it. When I tried
to use the IE 6.0 updater I downloaded via firefox. It says I already
have a newer version and quits. Removing IE with add and remove programs
and then trying to run the new download gives the same message.

Any ideas on how to get IE running again? I don't use it often, but some
sites absolutely require it.

I am running Win XP home Service pack 2 with IE 6. On a sony Vaio
powered by Centrino
