IE Freeze during Hotmail Session - Event ID 10010 - DCOM

Hi There,

As the admin of an internetcafe in germany I got big trouble at the moment.

When a user logs in to his hotmail e-mail account IE is freezing (sometimes)
completly. Sometimes only for a few seconds, sometimes for ever until i kill
the process. During this time it is possible to open a new instance of IE,
but the old one is gone. (and the my coustomer is angry ...)

Software:
Windows 2000 SP4 + latest security updates (Nov. 2004)
IE6 SP1 + latest updates (Nov. 2004)

Hardware:
Intel Celeron 2,4 / 256MB RAM / Intel 845G Chipset / IDE Hard Drive

The guests have only limited "user" rights. The are using server stored
mandatory user profiles. MSN Messenger 6.2 (latest version) is also
installed. I think, this is the program which is causing those freezes. I
think Hotmail got an option to comunicate with MSN Messenger and IE.

In the eventlog i can see for every freeze the following error:

Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Description: The server "{323C0F99-820A-4E0B-B714-57942C6D9678}" did not
register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Reinstalling IE and MSN Messenger didn't helped.

any ideas?

MS-KB and eventid.net didn't helped me ;-/

Hi Shake and Surf :)

Here is something you can try if you have Administrator rights:

Go in Tools > Internet Options>

Click on "Security" tab, select "Internet" and then "Custom Level"
Search for "Run ActiveX Controls and plug-ins" and set it to Prompt.

Disabling this may prevent Hotmail from showing the MSN Messenger status for
the email address on the hotmail account. If it is disabled, MSN Messenger
won't be asked to run which may be the cause of the problem.

also.....

Update your script engine:
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP

and...

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you
click a link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;281679

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:
http://www.winxptutor.com/lmzunlock.htm

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

This affects only the profile of the administrator. and because there is no
domain controller i have to apply this setting manually on the 15 stations.
bad enough, the guests got mandatory user profiles. i have to convert them,
apply the setting and convert them back. and this 15 times. ;-/

This only seems to affect a related problem with visual studio as far as
I can find. It definitely did not help us with this specific problem.

I have collected all known correct info and workarounds at
http://www.wiggy.net/texts/iefreeze , perhaps that might be of help.

Hi there!
I have collected all known correct info and workarounds at
http://www.wiggy.net/texts/iefreeze , perhaps that might be of help.

Ufff! i am not the only one with this problem. ok.

But all your suggestions are not the solutions for me:
Uninstall MSN messenger
Not applicable. the customers want the messenger.
Use a different browser such as Firefox
Is already installed. But the most poeples are using IE.
Disable ActiveX for hotmail
How can i disable active x only for hotmail.com? If i disable those scripts,
user got often error messages on other websites. ;-(
I can apply this setting only to the "Internet Zone"

..... until ... I put hotmail.com, .de, .fr and the other sites to the
"Restricted Zone" and apply there my own "hotmail-site-settings" ! thats a
very good idea!
Disable the DCOM
puh... I do not dare. (<-- google translation - sounds bad ;-))

But thanks for replay... to apply the zone settings. i think this is my best
solution so far.

But all the suggestions are only workarounds. not a real solution. if
somebody from ms would be so kind and post the ultimate solution here? ;-D
