IE Errors on Most Web Pages

When I load many web pages I get the following error:

"Invalid Character. Do you want to continue running
scripts on this page?"

It normally provides a very detailed (read: long) URL and
tells me the Line and Character that caused the problem,
but that doesn't help me much.

I've downloaded all the patches and have tried playing
with IE settings as best I know how. Any suggestions on
how to rid myself of this problem?

Pertinet (?) info:

OS: XP Home Edition
IE: 6.0

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Check the box to Disable script debugging.
Uncheck the box to Display a notification about every script error.

You might want to refresh your scripting engine:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/default.asp?contentid=28001169
or
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

I apparently had already done the check-box thing as they
were set in the manner you suggested. I did download the
newest scripting engine, but the problem persists.
