IE error when retrieving Windows 98 updates

Every time I go to the Microsoft Windows Update site to download security
patches, I receive a message that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close." This occurs consistently. I have
Googled for solutions to this without success. Does anybody have any
suggestions?
