ie error after virus cleanup

I bought a used laptop, ran a virus scan which found and cleaned over
37000 viruses (yes). Most were disinfected, 30 or so were deleted.

Now for some reason Internet Explorer and Yahoo Messenger both connect
initially and then completely quit (no warning they just disappear).

I knwo the connection works because Outlook Express gets mail and ftp
apps connect.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance

If a machine I owned was that seriously corrupted I would have no confidence
in it, and wouldn't bother trying to fix problems. A machine like that needs
to be wiped clean and reinstalled.

I was just thinking that myself :)

I did not ge restore disks with it if I have the MS serial # on the
back how can I go about getting install disks to wipe clean?

Thanks

37,000 viruses and you ask "Any ideas on what might be wrong?"

You don't mention what AV software was used nor what those 37,000 "viruses" were.

Since you state it was a used laptop, the *best* advice you can receive is to completely
wipe the notebook of all data and reinstall the OS of your choice from scratch. This is
what should be done when obtaining *any* used computer.

Never trust a previously owned machine - wipe it and then reinstall from
scratch so that you don't get compromised or have some backdoor.

Hi, that is the consensus and my thoughts too. I did not get install
disks with PC (though it is under warranty). How can I get XP disks
since it is a registered pc so I can just clean before setting it up as
my own?

Contact the one you bought the computer from and demand them as they are a part of the
computer and should have been supplied.

Staples, CompUSA, etc. The copy of Windows on the computer is not registered
to you.

What is the make and model of the computer? Is there a hidden restore
partition?

Hope this helps.

Well what is weird is it was acting ok *before* scan/disinfect and now
internet wont start/stay open and ditto Yahoo so i thought perhaps scan
could have done something (Kapersky)

Well interesting update. I had had kapesky shut off in terms of real
time protection but noticed when i launched a flash site a flashing "k"
logo before it shut down.

i removed kapersky, now ie yahoo work fine so I'll assume that kapersky
was somehow "protecting" it even though i though it disinfected the bad
files.
