IE Edit Icon

J

Joe Rohn

Hi Folks,

I think the question about the Edit Icon being grayed out in Internet
Explorer..has been asked about a million times. I think pretty much the
answer has come back a million times that deleting temp internet files, etc.
would clear that up. And every time I in fact tried that it worked (until
now) I have been scrounging Google, the Microsoft KB, etc. trying to find
out more about this situation..but not succeeding very well. I thought maybe
cookies might be a cause..but I basically turned security totally off on
IE..no change there. What is strange is that I have pages even on my own
sites where the edit icon will work..and other pages where it won't (usually
..asp pages)

Anyone have any ideas? A FrontPage setting? An IE Setting?

For all my U.S. friends..have a Great Thanksgiving! :)

Check the "Open with" entry in file types for the asp file extensions
My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File types.

Click once on ASP and then click advanced.
In the "Edit file type" dialog you should see:
Active Server Document as the file type and Edit listed under Actions:
Click once on Edit in the Action section to select it and then click the Edit button on the
dialog.
Under "Application use to perform action:" you should see:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\FRONTPG.EXE" "%1"
for FrontPage 2003
or
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10\FRONTPG.EXE" "%1"
for FrontPage 2002.

Thanks Steve..I went through that scenario..but still no joy. What is really
strange is the icon became "lit" for a second..but the dropdown wouldn't do
anything..it then went gray again while I was watching. That all happened on
this page:

http://www.timeforweb.com/frontpage/default.asp

If you have a moment could you (or anyone else for that matter) please see
if the IE Edit icon works for you on that page? At least that might help me
to narrow it down more..

Just Weird..Maybe it is Thanksgiving Gremlins! :)

I don't get a Edit With FP Icon there either...maybe because it's a Web Wiz
Forum page?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for that! It could be.....but I have seen it happen on other .asp
pages that way as well. After I replied back and forth with Steve..I went
back in and re-installed IIS5 and asp.net 1.1 and the FrontPage 2002
extensions...deleted all temp files and cookies again..and still nada!! I
might be crazy...(OK that's a given) but I cannot figure it out..at least
you have helped to understand that it isn't just me!

You can edit Web Wiz from within itself, but I have a feeling you'll bust it
with FP. I've used an offshoot of Web Wiz (Soopportal.org) running in a
subweb, did a little adjusting with FP but not much.

Thanks Tom,

It's baffling... there are a number us running into different issues with
this..For some (confirmed on multiple computers) we cannot see the edit with
IE Icon on even .htm pages (but only sometimes as others have no problems
with those same .htm pages.) Even those that cannot see the icon on certain
..htm pages..can get it on others. Doing the cleaning up of IE and FP tmp
files does not seem to help. There are others that cannot see any .asp pages
that way..while others can see some. Very strange.

The edit Icon is only visible "after" the entire page has loaded.

In the case of an .asp page... How can you edit something that don't exist.
The whole page is made on the server side via scripting and the information
from a database (or other) is then inserted in the proper place. Since the
page (as viewed) is not on the server for you to download and edit, it can't
be done.

Just a thought.....

Hi Tom,

What you stated would be exactly what I thought as well...But I think it
might come down to "normal" HTML content...vs. true .asp code on a page. For
example here's a page on a site I am working on for my wife.

http://www.giftsbymelitta.com/default.asp

At this point it doesn't have any .asp content in it really. (It will soon
though which is why I have given it an .asp extension) Right now just good
old html with an .asp extension..but it will open with the Edit Icon in IE.
So the question in my mind is still...where's the cutoff point?

The cut off is as soon as the page contains "any" content from server side
scripting.
If it is just a link to another .asp page, that will filter the data and
display it, then the page only contains HTML and can be edited even if using
the .asp extension.
The moment the page contains any content, say a dropdown list that is
populated with choices from a database then the answer is it can't be
done....
But, as with everything, there are some exceptions.
Even then the content from the database on that page will not be editable.
(or even there)

This is just from experiences I have had with the same situation.

Have you done this with a web site that is not yours?
If it is your web site, then yes, you can edit an .asp page, but again, when
you edit it you will not see the asp content.. only the page with the script
to get the content. (Right? as it would be in your FrontPage web)
I don't really think this is important enough to argue about.

T
|I have no problems use the Edit in IE link with .asp that have or do not
have server-side code.

Of course it is not possible to see the actual source of a ASP page unless you have the login info,
but the IE Edit with FP link is still available. If I understood Joe correctly, he is not always
seeing the IE Edit with FP link.

Whether it is a site that you have login info or not, the IE Edit with FP link should appear unless
the it is disable via a setting on the server. See Stefan's post.

Hi Folks,

Yes my real intent was to try and understand if there are absolute
definitions around when the IE Edit with FP Icon *should* be available. I am
beginning to think that there really aren't absolutes around this. (Or if
there are.for some reason it isn't consistent from computer to computer) My
guess at this point is that it might be related to a different security
level, cookies, or some other setting in IE (rather than anything directly
in FrontPage) I appreciate everyone's input! It certainly is not a huge
problem to me..more just one of interest!

Thanks!
