IE CLOSES AUTOMATICALLY

I have IE6 SP1 on a Windows XP Pro machine.Since the past
few days whenever I open IE (my default page is
about:blank) its ok as long as I dont type in a URL.On
typing in a URL it immediately closes itself.I have tried
the following options :
1.System restore
2.Disable startup from msconfig
3.sfc /scannow
4.Repair IE from the control panel/add remove
5.Run chkdsk /r from the recovery console

moreover even when I try to download the IE setup although
it gets downloaded while its installing the components the
window disappears.Please help !
