IE cannot set defaul browser

Hi,
When I run Internet Explorer 6.0 (IEXPLORE.exe), there's message as the
following:

Internet Exploere is not currently your default browser. Would you like
to make
it your default browser?

When I click 'yes', there's no Internet Explorer window opened, Internet
Explorer doesn't run.

Each time when I run Internet Explorer, the above message comes up again and
no Internet Explorer window opened.

If I login as the administrator and run Internet Explorer, the above message
comes up too, but Internet Explorer window does open.

What can I do about it? What Windows registration should be changed?

Thanks.

Windows versionn?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Hi Frank,

I use Windows 2000.

--"Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet
Shortcut)"

There's only 'URL:Internet Shortcut' in File Types and cannot have tow types
with same URL extension, can it?

Thank for your replay.

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol does not have an URL extension.
It has an extension of (NONE) in File Types.
Please try again.

Hi Alan,
I find an entry in File Types
extension - N/A
file type - URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

When it's selected, the 'Change' button is unabled. Click 'Advanced' button,
select 'open' and click 'Edit', nothing hapens, edit is not allowed. If click
'Set Default' button, nothing happens. 'If Remove 'open' action and close it,
when next time come in, 'open' action is still there.

There's an file type N/A URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy. It
has the same behavior as the above file type.

When I login as administrator, the above file types are the same, but it can
run IE.

Thanks.

OK. If you can't use 'edit', then I guess you cannot even see if the
details of URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol match what Frank
suggested. What about as administrator? Can you verify the details?

Do you have one of those horrible Symantec programs like NIS that may
be interfering?

Can you use Regedit and verify details of the relevant keys?

Hi Alan
I have the rights of administrator and even login as administrator I cannot
edit details of URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol.

What registration keys I should look at?

Thanks.

Hi Alan,

I don't kown how to set the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\HTTP
The value of 'open'/'command' is blank. I changed the 'open'/'command' value
to "c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe", when I leave it and
come back again it changes back as blank. I have no idea what's going on.

Thanks,
