and downloaded what it turns out is a free trial for software that costs
$29.95 after 30 days.

From memory, Paessler *used* to offer IEBooster in two flavours.

You could have...

a.) Advertising supported and (sort of) freeware, or,
b.) Pay your money and remove the ads.

Now it would appear that you can only have a trial of shareware, pity.

Of course, adware is adware. It isn't freeware or even "sort of" freeware.
