My Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer have both lost their menu
bars. I can no longer get to things like File, Edit, Favorites, Help,
etc. In addition, my setting of all Windows Explorer folders to
Details view disappeared. Without the menu bar, I'm unable to set it
back to what I want for all folders.
Have spent last 5 hours researching fixes for my problem. I've seen
the scores of posts referring folks to the Kelly and Doug MVP pages,
posts and utilities, all of which speak of deleting the ITBarLayout
binary value in the three
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
subkeys.
Unfortunately, those concepts and utilities don't fix my problem.
Here's the chain of events:
1) I had a virgin XP Pro install.
2) Comcast came. I ran their install disk. It customized my Internet
Explorer 6.0, and I don't know what else.
3) IE and Explorer worked fine for months.
4) As near as I can tell, it started when I repositioned the Icon,
Address and Links bars in IE to get them all occupying only one
horizontal bar, thereby increasing my real-estate for web pages.
5) Now no menu bar in either explorer-based application. In Windows
Explorer I get a full width horizontal white bar with a little Windows
flag icon in the middle. In IE, I get a full width horizontal black
bar with a little Comcast icon in the middle.
6) Nothing, and I mean nothing, has made any headway in getting my
menus back.
Here's what doesn't work:
1) F11, neither IE nor Explorer in full screen mode.
2) Reinstall IE per Knox's instructions, problems still there, Comcast
customizations (throbber) still apparent.
3) Deleting ITBarLayout: this is big one, I have no ITBarLayout key
values to delete. Restarting IE/Explorer and rebooting does NOT
recreate ITBarLayout.
4) Importing good ITBarLayout: imported good Toolbar keys from my
other machine. I can see the values in the registry, but when I open
IE or Explorer (still no menu) and refresh regedit, I see the
ITBarLayout values are now gone.
Has any of that sparked an idea in anyone's head? I could use a little
help.
