IE and DOS close unexpectedly at certain file

Running virus scans stop at certain point and IE closes, so cannot complete a
scan. Running System File Checker also stops at same point and IE closes.
Went in thru DOS and DOS closes unexpectedly when attempting to enter problem
sub-directory. In short, nothing will allow me to go into that subdirectory
to see what is in there, and attempting to remove the directory also fails
because it is "not empty". The sub-directory in question is hidden, found it
using dir/a.

Close IE before running virus scan.

Close IE before running sfc.exe.

Windows XP does not have DOS.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger

Does the folder open?

rd removes (deletes) a directory.

/S
Removes all directories and files in the specified directory
in addition to the directory itself. Used to remove a directory
tree.

/Q
Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to remove a directory tree with /S

Try this in a command prompt...

rd /s /q "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger"

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Thanks! But tried all, nothing worked to fix problem. Even the Command prompt
closes when attempting to view file. I still cannot complete sfc.exe, or any
virus scan. Also tried Start/Search and window closes when it reaches that
folder. However, running Ad-Aware in the "Quick Scan" mode works ok and finds
nothing major.

Have you tried turning the virus scan in safe mode?
