IE 7 can't view web sites but Firefox can

After typing ipconfig on a XP Home computer I was able to see the default
gateway. When I tried to ping from the command line the request timed out. IE
7 was not able to open any web sites.
Without changing anything else after installing Firefox I was able to open
web sites in Firefox.
In IE 7 > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings . I checked
Automatically detect settings.
What might be causing IE 7 not to view web sites and while Firefox is able?

Thanks for looking.

Un-check "Automatically detect settings" and all of the other boxes in
the LAN Settings window. There's no automatic configuration server or
proxy server on a typical home network.

Delete the temporary Internet files (which often fixes strange
problems in IE), then close and re-open IE 7.

If that doesn't help, please try these addresses in IE 7 and indicate
the results. All of them should go to the Google web site:

Steve,
Those suggestions did not enable IE 7 to view a web site. Wow. Still not
able to ping successfully.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Still able to view sites in
FF and get email via Outlook Express.
