IE 6 won't respond

Dave

I have installed version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422.-1633 on a Dell
4500 with XP Pro version 2002 SP1 installed.

Many sites that I could previously click on a control or a link to do
something won't respond anymore. There is no error message, and the
link will change color, but nothing will happen. For example, at the
community newsgroup explorer at support.microsoft.com, when I click on
"new post" nothing happens. (I am posting this through google). In
webmail, from my employer, I can view my emails in the preview pane,
but nothing happens when I click on "Reply" or when I double click on
the message itself (it should open a new window with the message
inside). And in Outlook 2000, when I clicked on this link in an email
message, <http://www.villatoscano.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Details/asp/id/72782.html>,
it should bring up IE, but nothing happens.

In the security tab of tools, internet options, I have pretty much
everything set to medium safety, and all the scripting options set to
enable or prompt.

Any ideas? Thanks, Dave

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Frank, Thanks, but that didn't quite do it. The Exchange webmail
page still does nothing when you click on "Reply" or double click on a
message to open it in a new window. The link in the Outlook 2000
email did open up a new browser window when I clicked on it, so we are
halfway there. Any other things I can try? This behavior started
when I installed XP Pro SP1 a few weeks ago.

Thanks, Dave

How about the Web link you gave?
Does that work?

The web link was a URL in an Outlook message, and yes, it works now.
But webmail still does not.

Frank: Thanks for the links. They don't seem to deal exactly with my
problem. I was just at windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and on the update
for DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime, there is a link for read more...
It wants to execute some Javascript code to open a new window, but
when I click it nothing happens. So somehow Javascript is disabled in
my browser? That would probably explain why the reply button in
outlook web mail doesn't work.

Dave, I seem to be having the exact same problem. I have scoured my
IE settings but can't find an explanation for it. Have removed all
adware/spyware, and virus scans are negative. If I do find a
solution, I'll let you know. Please let me know if you come up with
something.

Dave, I have resolved the issue here. Here's what I changed in IE. I
hope this works for you.

In the security settings panel, a couple of items under the SCRIPTING
section were disabled. Now all three items are enabled and my problem
is gone.

Good Luck,
Jay

The last thing I tried was repairing IE:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "c:\program files\internet
explorer\setup\setup.exe" /g "c:\windows\IE Uninstall Log.txt"

It told me it was repairing, then had me restart. I did, and had a
bad moment when every single icon on my desktop disappeared, leaving
me only with the background XP wallpaper. I stared at the gently
rolling, green hills and blue sky for a while, then shut down the
machine and restarted. Now the icons are back, but IE is not any
better.

It has also been suggested that I re-install IE6. Anyone have any
ideas?

Thanks, Dave

Since you have setupwbv.dll can we assume that you had IE6sp1 installed
before you installed XPsp1? If not, the version of setupwbv.dll could
be a problem.

It is suspected that certain security programs can interfere
with updates and repair procedures. Did you disable all such
programs (to prevent them from restarting during the reboot)
before starting the repair procedure?

For future reference it would have been better to have started
Task Manager and figured out what was happening.
At the very least you could have started a cmd window that way,
perhaps even started an iexplore.exe window.

Have you looked at the Fix IE Log.txt for clues?

It has also been suggested that I re-install IE6. Anyone have any
ideas?

Thanks, Dave

Good luck
