IE 6 won't create new index.dat

D

Darren Tam

Hello.

I deleted the "Content.IE5" folder fron the Local
Settings folder of the profile that I am using.

This was an attempt to try to fix the blank window
problem whenever I use "Open In New Window" command.

However opon reboot and reloading of IE6, the computer is
not creating a new "Content.IE5" folder of an index.dat
file. Instead, it is just dumping all the temporary
internet files in the main "Temporary Internet Files"
folder.

Any help or advice on this matter would be much
appreciated.

Darren;

I don't know why you want the damn thing back. Try to create a new
Content.IE5 folder under whichever path it's missing from.
i.e.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
C:\DOCUME~1\WESLEY~1.VOG\LOCALS~1\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Where are your tifs getting dumped into?

index.dat is recreated at startup if not present. If you deleted the file
from another user's folders, it won't reappear until that user logs on
again.

Visit some more websites. The subfolders in the TIF folder will start
reappearing. If you have IE set to delete its cache when you close it, you
need to visit a lot of sites *and* keep the browser open before you'll see
the security nested folders.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the reply.

Currently all the temporary internet files are being
dumped into the "Temporary Internet Files" folder of the
profile I am logged in to.

I've tried to create a new sub folder within
the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, but it won't allow
it. There is no option to create a New Folder when
the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is selected and I
can't copy an empty folder across into the directory
either.

The reason why I am trying to recreate a "Content.IE5"
folder and an "index.dat" fole is because I am still
getting blank windows whenever I use the "Open In New
Window" command with Internet Explorer 6 which causes it
to hang. Pressing F5 Refresh doesn't work. I then have to
close all the Internet Explorer windows using the Task
Manager before it will allow me to do anything else.

Any help or advice in resolving the matter would be much
appreciated.

Many thanks,

Darren

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for the post.

I deleted the "Content.IE5" folder and "index.dat" file
to try to solve the problem I was getting with blank
windows opening up whenever I used the "Open In New
Window" command with Internet Explorer 6 which caused it
to hang. Pressing F5 Refresh didn't work. I then had to
close all the Internet Explorer windows using the Task
Manager before it allowed me to do anything else.

I deleted the "Content.IE5" folder from my own profile
only. However I did reboot the system and looked up some
websites using my profile again, but when I took a look
at the Temporary Internet Files folder, there was
no "Content.IE5" subfolder nor was there an "index.dat"
file. Instead, all the temporary internet files have been
dumped into the Temporary Internet Files folder of the
profile that I am using.

I'm still looking to solve the blank window and hanging
of Internet Explorer 6 and I thought that this was
related to it.

Any help or advice in trying to resolve the matter would
be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Darren

Darren;

There are two Temporary Internet Files related to your profile.
If you right click the IE icon | Properties | General tab | Settings button
| View Files button
That will open
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

If you Start | Run | Type: cleanmgr | OK |
Highlight: Temporary Internet Files | View Files button |
That will open
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

Or
Start | Run | Type: %TEMP% | OK |
Click the Folders icon | Click the [+] next to
Temporary Internet Files and click
Temporary Internet Files
That will open
C:\DOCUME~1\YOUR~1.HER\LOCALS~1\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

The folder with Content.IE5 is somehow related to offline files. If you use
OE it will have lots in it. Smoke and mirrors.

Darren;

I just read your other thread Mysterious directories appearing. You *do*
have scumware. You may have a virus. This/these may be causing your other
problems.

You said you'd run Ad-aware, did it have the latest updates??
With scumware it seems that just one program may not find and rid you of
these parasites, you need to use more than one.

First.
Right click the IE icon | Properties | Advanced tab |
Make sure both of these are NOT checked.

Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)
[[Specifies to automatically download and install Internet Explorer
components if a Web page needs them in order to display the page properly or
perform a particular task.]]
 Enable Install On Demand (Other)

Second.
It is known as Scumware. Visit these sites. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are really good.
Download, install, run, update and run again; one or all. They are all
good, FREE utilities.
The first site gives some recommendations.
