IE 6 - Why so slow?

Many pages work fine, but certain ones (good example is
the ESPN.com homepage) are extremely slow once the page
has finished loading. When trying to scroll the page
there is a long delay. When clicking a box or typing in
a window it sometimes takes several seconds for the
operation to occur onscreen, even if it's just one click
or one typed character. This is not a slow ISP problem,
it happens with any ISP and I have a normally fast cable
modem.

Might this be due to an incorrect IE6 setting? A virus
program? Or even a virus itself?
