IE 6 upgrade slow to open; AOL http no, https yes

Sorry for the crossposting but after a week of various uninstalls,
reinstalls, etc. I am stumped.

I have a couple of problems that may or may not be interrelated.

Long and short, my registry was corrupted and I reinstalled WIN98SE. I
then had to go and reinstall the majority of my programs to get them to
work right. Everything on my PII 450 worked just fine prior to this
catastrophic failure.

All is well and back to how it was now, with the exception of two
things:

1. My AOL browser (7.0) will not allow me to access HTTP sites but
WILL allow me to access HTTPS sites. This is with or without Zonealarm
running. Also, the buddy list does not pop up and AOL hangs about 10
seconds when starting up. Every other feature of AOL works just fine
besides the BL and HTTP access.

2. I had a fully updated version of IE6 on my system prior to my
rebuild and it was fast and fine in every way. Now, when I start a
copy of IE6, it takes 10 to 15 seconds for it to get up and running.
After it is running, however, it's fine. Again, this was reinstalled
at the rebuild, too.

I have reinstalled DNS/RMS, Winsock2, AOL. . . blah, blah, blah. I
can't get anywhere on the AOL HTTP problem BUT if I revert back to IE5
(which came with 98SE) IE opens and runs just fine again.

Any tips? I've googled high and low on this one and can't get it
licked.

Did you install IE6 SP1 via Windows Update? Have you returned to Windows
Update to install all critical updates offered?

Is a reliable anti-virus application installed and configured properly? (It
should be configured to seek and install updates automatically, daily, at a
time when the machine is usually running and connected to the internet. It
should also be configured to run a full system scan a few minutes after
seeking/installing updates, also daily. Anything less is simply
insufficient these days.)

Is a firewall installed?

Have you run a thorough check for hijackware?

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

One thing that I would double-check is make sure that you have the http and
https protocols installed, or maybe even try reinstalling the protocols
individually. Something else that I would recommend doing, although if
you're anything like my dad you're not going to like this idea, would be to
upgrade to Windows XP SP2 (Windows 98 is pretty old, there is a lot of
software that doesn't run on it, and if they haven't already, Microsoft will
soon stop supporting and providing updates for it). AOL is also not a very
good browser to begin with. But based on the information you gave me, try my
initial suggestion of checking the protocols, that's about all I can suggest

Yes to all. Sorry, should have stated all that. Ad-Aware with an
updated profile did a sweep as has Norton. Nada.

Heh. No, no. Well have none of that XP silliness. My wife's has
that - I hate that OS.

Heck, I still have my PII 450 since it does everything I want it to do
and, with this exception, when it goes south, I know how to fix it!

I'll research the protocol thing and try that. Thanx.

Oh, if by the protocalls you mean reinstalling the items listed in the
NETWORK control panel (TCP/IP, Dial-up adapters, etc.) I already did a
complete uninstall/reinstall of those. I didn't try any registry
deletions or editing with those uninstalls, tho. All worked the same
after as it did before the un/reinstalls. Firefox & Mozilla - flawless
but anything IE based still had the aforementioned problems.

(a) Does that happen whether/not you are on the Internet?
(b) Delete your Temporary Internet Files, incase there is a corruption...
"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete all
offline content, OK, OK".
(c) Does it happen in a clean boot situation?

How to Troubleshoot Using the Msconfig Utility with Windows 98

Careful with that one, though. Don't turn off System.ini or Win.ini,
unless you know how to restore them in DOS.

First, just... "START button, Run, MSConfig", & turn off the Startup Group. After reboot, does IE run well? (If you go online, your virus checker will be off. So, careful with that.)

If it does run well, something in the Startup Group is interfering. Turn half back on, to see whether it is that half. Etcetera.

it reads:

The asterisk is all that pops up when I try and access HTTP pages.

I had Googled the ABSyncerror to not much success. . .
