There are several reasons this can happen, try the following and see if it
helps:
IE shuts down without warning

You may also need to update or replace your video driver. Go to the website
of the manufacturers of your video device and download and install the
latest driver from there.
Go to
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html.
Download J2SE v 1.4.2_06 JRE. (Make sure you get the JRE file, not the SDK
file, unless you are a software developer).
Install it.
Perhaps a Java issue:
Tools/internet options/advanced/Microsoft VM
Check only the JIT compiler box and leave the Java boxes unchecked (default)
Go to Start>Run type in
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll (notice the space between 32 and urlmon)
Hit enter and ok out
also....
Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions
If this stops the problem, then you have some form of scumware on your
system that must be removed for your system to function properly. Do the
following:
In addition to updating and running your AV, download, install and run the
programs below in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled. This will remove
the nasty you have and any others it may have let in the back door. Some
malware can replicate itself repeatedly if not removed properly, so even if
you have already run some programs, run them again according to the
information below. Follow all instructions carefully:
First, Clear the TIF's and empty the recycle bin:
